Veddriq Leonardo Wins Gold for Indonesia in Speed Climbing, Sets New Asian Record

Indonesia’s Veddriq Leonardo claimed a historic victory at the Paris 2024 Olympics, winning the gold medal in men’s speed climbing and breaking the Asian record with a time of 4.75 seconds. Leonardo’s narrow win over China’s Wu Peng, who took silver with a time of 4.77 seconds, brought Indonesia its first gold medal of the Games.

The excitement continued in the bronze medal match, where American climber Sam Watson set a new world record with a time of 4.74 seconds, securing the bronze medal. Watson had earlier broken his own world record in the quarterfinals with a time of 4.75 seconds, but fell short in the semifinals against Wu Peng.

In the women’s event, Poland’s Aleksandra Miroslaw broke the world record with a time of 6.10 seconds to win gold, while China’s Deng Lijuan set a new Asian record with a time of 6.18 seconds, earning China’s first-ever Olympic climbing medal.
